Much like Ilya Naishuller delightful new film NOBODY let’s just cut to the chase. This is an exciting and needlessly violent film.

From UPHE.com:

Hutch is a nobody. As an overlooked and underestimated father and husband, he takes life’s indignities on the chin and never rocks the boat. But when his daughter loses her beloved kitty-cat bracelet in a robbery, Hutch hits a boiling point no one knew he had. What happens when a pushover finally pushes back? Hutch flips from regular dad to fearless fighter by taking his enemies on a wild ride of explosive revenge. The writer of John Wick showcases Emmy® winner Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) as fans have never seen him before: an average family man who becomes a lethal vigilante unlike any ordinary action hero.

If you were to come up to me on the street and bet me 5 bucks that I couldn’t guess that the writer of NOBODY, Derek Kolstad, is the same guy who wrote JOHN WICK, you would be out 5 dollars. Something forces the hand of some dude who was out of the game to get back into the game and people die. Also, there is a cute pet. It is pretty basic, and that is okay.

I watch action movies for ridiculous stunts, unnecessary explosions, please don’t count the clip capacity gun-fu. If a movie can do this without some overt racism or sexism, then they’ve got a good modern action movie. NOBODY does just that. What is even better is that RZA gives you all the necessary exposition before one of the most “the what now” final action scenes you could ever want.

I never thought of Bob Odenkirk as an action star. He always appeared as physically intimidating as a car salesperson, but it turns out he was perfect for this role. During the bus fight I could almost see Denzel Washington saying, “okay, okay, he’s a scrapper.” Mind you, this doesn’t happen, please don’t expect it and yell at me when it doesn’t happen.

I hate to relegate the film to a tired cliche, but I would not be surprise if this film is quickly forgotten only to have a revival on a cult circuit a decade from now. It is a tight ninety minutes of mayhem that is perfect for a subsection of cinema fans who are die hards for the DIE HARDs. But time will tell whether this gem will create another big series for Kolstad or be a one-off.
