Summer Film Festival 2017 – Day Four

They Live by Night

Director: Nicolas Ray

Screenplay:

Minutes: 95

Year: 1948

Score: 6.67

Release: Criterion Collection

I am rather new to Nicolas Ray and have somehow never watched Rebel Without a Cause, that’s how new. I have seen a few and have enjoyed each of them. They Live by Night is no different. It is crisp and fresh and, as his debut feature, it is a real achievement.

For a crime/noir fan this is a very strong recommendation.

I wish I skipped this one; they are beyond goofy but they are so engaging. You know if you want to watch this and there is nothing that I can say to change your mind.

Ghost World

Year: 2001

Score: 8.00

Release: Criterion Collection

I wish that I had watched this movie years ago even though it may not have left the same impress. I love this movie but it is very idiosyncratic and I imagine this will certainly not work for everyone.

Logan: Noir

Director: James Mangold

Screenplay:

Minutes: 137

Year: 2017

Score: 7.13

I enjoyed Logan when I watched it in the theater. I cried. Logan: Noir is so much of a better experience that I don’t think I would want to watch it in color again. What really interested me was that the violence, while still extreme, felt tame when the red turns to black.

This is a different experience. I did not cry the second time even though I enjoyed it even more. This is worth the pickup since the Noir edition is a special feature of the main release.
